How To Make A Fake Check
First, start with the special paper that banks and companies print checks on. You can buy check paper online and it is not illegal to do so. Once you have your check paper you can look on the internet to find an image of a blank check, you’ll just have to format it so you can put in your own names and numbers before you print. Those numbers on real checks (such as the account number and routing number) are printed in MICR ink. MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. The banks use this special magnetized ink in order for their computers to recognize and read the numbers off of printed documents. It is like a barcode, but unlike barcodes, people can read the numbers printed in MICR as well as computers. In order to make a good fake check, you must use MICR ink and also use the same font that the banks use. The major MICR fonts used around the world are E-13B and CMC-7. Check writing in almost all Indian, US, Canadian and UK checks use the E-13B font. (The “13? in the font’s name refers to the 0.013 inch grid used to design it).
Abandonment: A Type of Check Fraud
Abandonment is when a check, real or fake, is deposited into a legitimate bank account. The person cashing the check knows that it is a fake check or that the real check has not been authorized. The person cash’s the check immediately (because soon the bank will find out that the check isn’t good) and doesn’t come back to the account. This method is often used by petty criminals and in identity theft.
Frank Abagnale
Frank Abagnale was the most famous “bad check artist” of the 20th century. He devised a scheme to put incorrect MICR numbers at the bottom of the check which he wrote. With the wrong MICR numbers, the checks would be routed to the incorrect Federal Reserve Bank for clearing. This allowed Abagnale to work longer in one area before his criminal activity was detected.
